David and François have one thing in common: love for their own countries and respect for tradition. The first one would not let go the financial interests of London city, whereas the second one fought like a lion to position Strasburg as a capital of the European Parliament. When it comes to details, their arguments sound as if they both wanted to justify intervention in Mali. `On behalf of France I have decided to intervene`, perorated Hollande (because in this case UE does not really count). The speech of Holland seemed to be `Archeuropean` from the first side, yet it was filled with expressions like: `me as the head of my country`, `I represent France`, `it is in the interest of France`. Hollande in this way named a new friction in the UE. The president of France wants to act „pour l’ensemble de l’Europe”, for the whole of Europe. His four principles deal with UE budget. It should be high enough so the costs of our common expenses, sustainable development policy, agriculture policy, as well as the costs of sustaining stability pact can be covered. He also called for reform of the international monetary system, so the interests of Europe will be better protected. Surely, London is not very excited.
British `less of Europe` meets French `more of Europe`. Just in the middle stands… Angela Merkel and she chooses from both presented visions… naturally, parts that are the most attractive for Germany. Germany, according to the speech of Polish, Foreign Affairs Minister, Mr Sikorski, was expected to become a leader in promoting closer cooperation between all European countries. However, it turned out that Germany is not interested. Today they are hiding behind UK’s back, not agreeing to transfer sovereignty to the European Union Institutions, while at the same time they want more means for sustainable development policy (from its source the Eastern Lands have been reformed). London, on the other hand, is becoming a new ally of Germany, taking the place of France. Economy is following politics, two countries trade exchange will increase.
And what is the reaction of Poland? We want to maintain high investments for sustainable development and agriculture, same as France. So are we closer to French proposal? Minister Sikorski recently exaggerated saying that “Cameron through his speech made the UK a member of countries with special needs”. It is hard not to have an impression that he was talking about the opposition, which is in the same political group as British. Was it needed that aversion to national opposition has gone so far?
Disturbance in Poland like paralysis. Warsaw in response to events in Europe keeps being silent, suppressed by the evaluation of situation. We are supposed to be in the mainstream, meanwhile there are two streams and we are not in any of them. We are somewhere between the players and our position is not strong. We are screaming “more Europe”, even when our biggest neighbour stopped to love this slogan. Unnecessarily, we antagonize United Kingdom, because most of Cameron’s proposals, mostly that about competitiveness, are beneficial for Poland. Polish economy, with little help of structural economy, could use lower labour cost bonus, to sell more to other EU countries. Otherwise, it can happen that British, German and French will take care of their business and Polish will stay with “more Europe” slogan alone.Author : Pawel Kowal MEP
