I think a good event reminds people that there are new possibilities out there. It is warm and friendly and gives people a nice backdrop to meet new people and explore common interests or discover new ones. It is open to new ways of thinking and gives room for experiments and new projects that have not crystalised, but are exciting to discuss.
“Play Therapy is the systematic use of a theoretical model to establish an interpersonal process wherein play therapists use the therapeutic powers of play to help clients prevent or resolve psychosocial challenges and achieve optimal growth and development. A working definition might be a form of counseling or psychotherapy that therapeutically engages the power of play to communicate with and help people, especially children, to engender optimal integration and individuation.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Play_Therapy
The Sandbox environments are based on the idea that people are left completely free to do what they want but that there is an overall gameplan. On the overall, there are some with the drive and personal energy to create something new or fulfil an old idea. Because the freedom equates to “exactly what I want to do” and the action comes from “having to create something for the performance”, it is highly valued by creative people in terms of widening their scope.
In this experiment, we were working with artists. It is useful to look at the opportunity for this kind of approach but then in a multilateral approach. We had 25 people, everyone did what they wanted. Many projects got started, not everything got finished. By the end of the week there was a very successful event with a full capacity venue and then I edited the video from the tapes from the people who filmed.
It was just a no-budget way of looking into involving people. All the creative people involved were doing some job or other, or unemployed but all were high-potential people. In the group, the dynamics of the content were developed by the group. Everything that visitors saw was created by the participants during the week.Author : Pras Anand
