Commission Vice President Kristalina Georgieva and Dimitar Berbatov, the Bulgarian striker for AS Monaco, will be candidates for President and Vice President in the country’s elections due next year.

The two most famous Bulgarians living abroad met on 27 March in Brussels to discuss the difficult political situation in their home country [see photo gallery]. Opinion polls have frequently placed Georgieva very high as the most popular political figure in her country, from which she has been largely absent since 1988.

Georgieva who has refused several invitations to return to national politics has decided this time to take the initiative herself and to be an independent candidate for President. Berbatov reportedly took her invitation to run on the same ticket as Vice President. He plans to put an end to his football career just before the elections, due on 1 April 2016.

Asked for a statement, Georgieva abstained from commenting the political situation in Bulgaria until she will keep the post of Commission Vice President, responsible for the EU budget and human resources.

However, it is widely known that Bulgaria has lacked political leadership to extract the country from economic slump and to combat deeply rooted corruption and cronyism. Over her first term as Commissioner, Georgieva has done her best to deliver the EU messages to the successive Bulgarian prime ministers, without visible result.

A Commission press release relates the meeting between Berbatov and Georgieva but stops short from entering into Bulgarian politics. A Facebook page “Kristalina Georgieva for President” has just been created and has already more than 2600 likes.
